GERMANY / North Rhine-Westphalia / Minden / The 'Schachtschleuse', the lock at the Mittelland Canal and Weser River was built between 1911 and 1914. The 325-kilometre-long Midland Canal connects the Elbe-Havel Canal and Dortmund-Ems Canal and is the longest artificial waterway in Germany. The Weser forms through the confluence of the rivers Fulda and Werra in Hannoversch Muenden. With a length of 452 kilometres, it is the fifth longest river in Germany.
