Italy / Puglia / Santa Cesarea Terme / 2009 / Beautiful intricate Islamic detailing on the Villa Sticchi - one of the most famous expressions of the Moresque style of architecture, of which there were numerous examples along the rich seaside resort towns of the Puglia coast. The style borrowed many design influences from Moorish and Middle Eastern Islamic architecture. The villa was built for Giovanni Pasca and designed by Pasquale Ruggieri between 1894-1900, who had a great interest in Egypt and the East.

Trulli are a traditional stone dwelling with a conical roof found in parts of Puglia (especially in the region surrounding the hill village of Cisterino). The style of construction is specific to Itria Valley in the Murge area of the Italian region of Puglia. Today the surviving trulli are popular among English and German tourists and are often bought and restored for general use. However, anyone wishing to restore a trullo needs to conform with many regulations as trulli are protected under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage law.

Italy / Puglia / Porto Cesareo / 2009 / The entry gate to an unoccupied, run down Masseria - medieval fortified farmhouse - near the town of Nardo. Typically they comprise a walled enclosure with farmhouse at the front, workers quarters, barns and horsestables, equipment and grain storage within. Scattered across the countryside of Puglia, there are many such masseria. Some have been restored in recent years and renovated into country houses by rich families, or converted into hotels as part of Italy's trend into so-called 'green' agricultural tourism.

The city's old town is an historic precinct located on a small fortified island at the mouth of the harbour, separated from the new city by a 16th century bridge. of narrow winding roads, 18th and 19th century homes with shuttered windows and small balconies.
